After an amazing seven-day trip to Bangkok, it is finally time to go home. I have spent the week exploring the busy city streets, visiting beautiful temples, and staying at incredible hotels like the Park Hyatt Bangkok and St. Regis Bangkok. Every moment has been unforgettable.

The warm hospitality, friendly people, and delicious food make every visit feel magical, and I can not wait to come back.

After days of sightseeing and eating incredible meals, I am exhausted but happy. The only thing I do not look forward to is the cold winter weather waiting for me in Switzerland. But there is one thing that excites me: flying home in the new KLM Business Class on their Boeing 777-300ER.

Award Flight Booking (9/10)

I am determined to fly KLM Business Class on at least one leg of my Bangkok trip to add another iconic Delft Blue Gin House to my collection. #iykyk. After some searching, I find award availability for my return flight from Bangkok (BKK) to Zurich (ZRH) via Amsterdam (AMS), flying the “new” KLM Business Class on the Boeing 777-300ER.

I book the flight about a month in advance using the Air France-KLM Flying Blue award program. The redemption price comes to 77,000 Flying Blue miles plus approximately $200 in taxes and fees – a fair deal for a premium long-haul flight of more than 10 hours.

Here is the exact itinerary I book:

• KL 0844: Bangkok, Thailand (BKK) to Amsterdam, The Netherlands (AMS) – departing 12:15, arriving 18:45 (12hrs 30min)
• KL 1927: Amsterdam, The Netherlands (AMS) to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH) – departing 21:10, arriving 22:30 (1hr 20 min)

Note: This review only covers the first flight from Bangkok to Amsterdam.

Now, here is where I have a bit of luck: I take advantage of a 20% transfer bonus from American Express Membership Rewards to Flying Blue. With the bonus factored in, the cost drops to just over 64,000 Amex points – a fantastic value compared to the cash price, which often exceeds $3,000.

Locking in this flight feels like a major win, not just for the solid points redemption, but also for the chance to experience the refreshed KLM Business Class cabin.

Airport Check-In (5/10)

Checking in at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is simple, but it is nothing special. As I approach the KLM check-in area, I see a staff member directing passengers. However, she seems uninterested and barely makes eye contact.

Luckily, there is no line for Business Class passengers or SkyTeam Elite members, so I walk right up to the counter. The check-in process is smooth and efficient, taking less than five minutes from start to finish. The service feels a bit cold, but I am happy to get through quickly and head toward security and the Air France-KLM lounge.

Sometimes, efficiency is more important than extra attention, and in this case, it gets the job done.

Note: KLM no longer adds priority tags to checked bags for Business Class or Elite members. Baggage handling is now fully managed through electronic scanning. While this system is likely more efficient and better for the environment, it does make the experience feel a little less “premium” without the familiar priority tag on my suitcase.

Security And Immigration

Business Class passengers can use a dedicated Fast Track security line. However, the KLM staff do not mention this perk during check-in. I only find out when I specifically ask if there is an expedited security option for Business Class travelers.

The agent confirms it almost as an afterthought, which feels like a missed opportunity for better service.

I am glad I ask because the regular security line is packed with travelers. In contrast, the Fast Track lane is nearly empty, allowing me to breeze through in just a few minutes.

Lesson learned: always ask about premium security options, even if they are not proactively offered.

Note: You do not need to fly First or Business Class to use the Fast Track lane at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. It is also available to disabled passengers, families with young children, pregnant women, senior citizens (70+), and Buddhist monks.

Air France-KLM Lounge (7/10)

After clearing security and immigration, I head straight to the Air France-KLM Lounge in Terminal F of Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. It is about a 10- to 15-minute walk from security, passing dozens of shops – a great chance for last-minute souvenir shopping.

The lounge location is a bit unusual, tucked one floor below the main terminal level. As I step inside, I immediately notice that the space feels a little dated, but it still offers a quiet escape from the busy airport above.

Since it is still morning, the lounge is serving breakfast. The spread includes bread, cheese, sliced deli meats, eggs, cereal, and a small selection of fresh fruit. The options are limited and not very exciting, but I have to give them credit for offering instant noodle soup, which happens to be a guilty pleasure of mine!

The lounge also has shower facilities, though they are extremely small. Unfortunately, all were occupied during my visit, so I could not check them out.

Other Lounges Options

Not long after I settle into the Air France-KLM Lounge, it starts to get crowded. With extra time before boarding, I decide to check out a few other lounges available through my Priority Pass membership.

My first stop is the Turkish Airlines Lounge, which is practically empty – a nice change from the busy Air France-KLM space. It is quiet and relaxing, but it feels a bit lifeless. The breakfast selection is disappointing, though I know Turkish Airlines lounges are usually much better during lunch and dinner.

Next, I visit the Oman Air Lounge, and I am immediately impressed. Despite its small size, this lounge quickly becomes my favorite Priority Pass option at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).

The layout is thoughtfully designed, with stylish decor and a welcoming atmosphere. The food selection is far better than the other lounges. I help myself to chicken satay with peanut sauce, and it is honestly one of the best lounge snacks I have had in a long time.

I consider visiting a few more Priority Pass lounges, but it is now time to board.

Aircraft Cabin And Layout (8/10)

The KLM Business Class cabin on the Boeing 777-300ER features a reverse herringbone layout. Window seats angle toward the windows, while middle seats angle inward toward each other. This design is known for maximizing privacy and comfort. All 35 Business Class seats have direct aisle access, ensuring every passenger enjoys a private and easily accessible space.

The cabin is divided into two sections:

• A larger main Business Class cabin with seven rows in a 1-2-1 layout
• A smaller “mini” Business Class cabin with just two rows, also in a 1-2-1 layout

The smaller cabin is located behind the main galley and the second set of emergency exits. While it is closer to the Premium Economy section, it offers a more intimate experience.

I am seated in 5K, a window seat, which I always prefer to help manage my occasional turbulence-related anxiety. I am especially happy to have a window view on this flight since the route passes by the Himalayas.

I also like being in the middle of the main Business Class cabin because it is roughly equidistant from both galleys. This helps reduce noise and minimizes light from the galleys when the cabin lights are dimmed – perfect for catching a nap on this long daytime flight.

Note: Air France-KLM now charges $100 to $200 per person for advanced seat selection on award tickets, depending on the route and seat location. However, choosing a seat is free at check-in.

Business Class Seat (8/10)

As I arrive at my Business Class seat, I immediately notice a bottle of water and the menu waiting for me. The seat itself is spacious and comfortable, with thoughtful design elements that enhance the in-flight experience.

On the window side, there is a small cubby that holds the amenity kit, headphones, and a small mirror. While it is not very large, it is enough to store essentials like glasses, a phone, or a water bottle. Right next to the cubby, I find a small reading lamp and the entertainment remote, both within easy reach.

One of my favorite features is the wireless phone charger built into the window-side armrest. Since I typically travel with two phones, I love that I can charge both at the same time without needing extra cables. This is a practical and modern touch that makes a big difference.

In front of me, the 18-inch entertainment screen stands out immediately. Below the screen, there is a small storage space for items like glasses, though it is too small for a water bottle. Next to this space, there is a power outlet with both USB and USB-C ports, which is incredibly handy for charging multiple devices.

On the aisle side, there is an adjustable armrest that I can raise or lower, which makes sitting more comfortable after takeoff.

The biggest miss is the privacy door. While it provides some separation from the aisle, it feels flimsy and only locks with a simple magnet. It is better than nothing, but I wish it felt more secure and sturdy.

Business Class Bed (7/10)

Waiting for me at my seat is a pillow and blanket. Both are functional, but nothing particularly special – certainly not on the same level as the cooling pillow offered by United Airlines. That said, the blanket is quite soft, which makes it comfortable for resting.

The seat controls are located on the window-side armrest. Like most airlines, KLM offers multiple seat modes, including takeoff and landing, relax, and fully flat bed. Adjusting the seat is simple, and the transition to bed mode is smooth.

Since this is a daytime flight, sleeping is not really my priority, so I do not get the chance to fully test out how comfortable the bed is for an extended rest. However, I do try it out briefly. 

The top part of the bed is nice and wide, which I appreciate since I have broad shoulders. The footwell, however, is on the smaller side and narrows toward the end, which could feel a bit restrictive for some passengers.

On-Board Entertainment (8/10)

The KLM on-board entertainment delivers an impressive experience, thanks to a large 18-inch touchscreen loaded with a wide selection of movies, TV shows, and more. The content library offers a great mix of new releases and timeless classics, with older movies organized by release year.

On my flight, I spot new blockbusters like Wonka, IF, and Deadpool & Wolverine, along with fan favorites like Crazy Rich Asians, Barbie, and Avatar. There are also complete series, including Harry Potter, Aliens, and The Dark Knight Trilogy.

One feature I really appreciate is the ability to add movies and shows to a “Favorites” list while scrolling. This makes navigating the entertainment system much easier since I do not have to keep searching for titles I want to watch later.

Another standout feature is a helpful timeline bar on the home screen. It shows exactly when drink service, meal service, and snack service will happen throughout the flight. This simple but brilliant idea eliminates the guesswork and helps me plan my time on board.

Lavatory (8/10)

The lavatory on this KLM Boeing 777-300ER is standard for this aircraft: functional, with just enough space, but nothing overly roomy. Unlike newer planes like the Boeing 787 or Airbus A350, there is no window.

There are two lavatories in Business Class, one at the front near the galley and another between the main and mini Business Class cabins. This is one fewer than usual for a plane of this size, but thankfully, there is rarely a line during the flight.

What really stands out is the unique design. The walls are decorated with images of the iconic KLM Delft Blue gin houses, and even the toilet seat has a dark Delft Blue shade. It is a refreshing change from the usual sterile white or beige found on most airlines.

Amenity Kit (8/10)

Amenity Kit (6/10)

Instead of a standard zippered pouch, the KLM amenity kit unrolls into a compact tote bag with handy side pockets. It is a clever design, but it may not be the most practical for reuse after the flight.

One of the most interesting details is the color scheme. Instead of the usual KLM white and blue color scheme, this kit features elegant purple tones inspired by traditional Thai colors. This suggests the kit is likely exclusive to the Bangkok (BKK) to Amsterdam (AMS) route.

Inside, the kit offers a good mix of practical and eco-friendly items. Standard amenities include a bamboo toothbrush with toothpaste, earplugs, socks, a face mask, a pen, and luxury skincare products from Marie-Stella-Maris. The focus on sustainability, especially with biodegradable items like the bamboo toothbrush, shows the commitment of KLM to being more environmentally friendly while still offering a premium experience.

Signature Delft House (10/10)

In my opinion, the KLM Delft Blue House is the best keepsake offered in any Business Class cabin worldwide. This iconic tradition sets KLM apart and adds a special, collectible element to the flight. It is one of the main reasons I chose this flight over other options.

For those unfamiliar, these miniature ceramic houses are modeled after real Dutch buildings and are filled with Dutch gin (genever). They have been a signature part of the KLM long-haul international Business Class experience since the 1950s, blending Dutch heritage with a fun collectible twist.

Toward the end of the flight – usually about an hour before landing – flight attendants distribute the houses throughout the cabin. Passengers typically get a choice of around 10 models, but if you have a specific one in mind, do not hesitate to ask. The crew is usually happy to accommodate if it is available.

Food And Beverage (7/10)

The KLM Business Class dining experience on this flight is impressive, offering a mix of unique flavors, thoughtful presentation, and high-quality ingredients. From pre-departure drinks to dessert, the meal service feels well-planned and satisfying.

Pre-Departure Service

Before takeoff, the crew offers a signature “blue drink,” the name of which I forget – a bright blue, non-alcoholic, fruity refreshment unique to KLM. Passengers can also choose orange juice or champagne. The blue drink is a fun touch and adds a bit of personality to the experience.

Post-Takeoff Snack

Shortly after takeoff, a snack service begins with a bowl of warm mixed nuts and a drink of choice. I opt for a Coca-Cola with lemon and ice, a simple but refreshing choice. The nuts are served in a blue-and-white Delft-style ceramic bowl, which is so elegant that it is tempting to take as a keepsake – just like the famous salt and pepper shakers on Virgin Atlantic!

Main Meal Service

Immediately after the snack service, the main meal is served. The KLM on-board menu features a mix of international flavors and Dutch influences, with a focus on fresh ingredients and well-balanced flavors.

• Appetizer: The meal starts with a grilled chicken salad featuring Asian winged beans and julienned chicken, along with a side salad. The flavors are fresh and well-balanced, though I personally would have liked a bit more dressing on the side salad.

• Main Course: For the main course, I choose the “Tasting of Delicacies” – a beautifully presented plate with: scallops with red curry and pineapple, chicken patties, steamed beans and carrots, and steamed rice. The dish is packed with flavor and spice, which is a pleasant surprise for a European carrier. The influences from Dutch colonial history in Southeast Asia are clear in the bold, aromatic spices.

• Dessert: To finish the meal, there is a choice between a cheese selection or a sweet dessert plate featuring: chocolate mousse, macaron, and pistachio financier. I go with the dessert plate, and it is absolutely delicious.

As a final touch, the crew also hands out a chocolate Dutch house, adding a bit of sweetness to wrap up the main dining experience.

Mid-Flight Snack

About halfway through the flight, a mid-flight snack (known as the Sky Break Meal) is served. On this flight, the option is a warm chicken tawook wrap.

The wrap is flavorful, well-seasoned, and perfectly satisfying. In fact, it is so good that I end up having two!

Pre-Landing Light Meal

As the flight nears its end, the crew serves a light meal. The tray includes a side dish of tuna tataki on a lentil salad, a chocolate caramel tartlet, and a choice of vegetarian quiche or beef balls in mushroom sauce. 

I choose the beef balls, which are decent but not as memorable as the other meals on this flight. The chocolate caramel tartlet, however, is a nice sweet touch to end the meal. 

While this dish does not quite match the quality of the previous courses, I know I can grab something more satisfying at the KLM Lounge when I land.

Staff And Service (9/10)

One thing I have always appreciated about flying KLM is the consistently excellent service, and this flight is no exception. The cabin crew is attentive, proactive, and focused on making sure every passenger has a comfortable experience.

From the moment I board, the flight attendants are helpful and quick to offer assistance. Their friendly, approachable demeanor makes the service feel warm and personal – something that leaves a lasting impression, even among top-tier Business Class experiences.

What stands out most is how well the crew handles issues when they arise. For example, the cabin feels unusually warm before and after takeoff, but the crew quickly acknowledges the issue and adjusts the temperature as soon as possible. Later, when my in-flight entertainment system stops working, they respond immediately and get it back up and running without any hassle.

Problems can happen on any flight, but it is how the crew responds that truly defines great service. KLM excels in this regard.

Final Thoughts

I chose this flight specifically to experience the new KLM Business Class product. While the new KLM Business Class is not groundbreaking like Qatar Airways QSuites or ANA The Room, it is a solid and dependable option that delivers comfort, great service, and thoughtful amenities.

The seat is spacious and comfortable, though the footwell is a bit tight, and the privacy door could be sturdier. The onboard entertainment system is excellent, with a large screen and a great selection of movies and TV shows. The wireless phone charger is a standout feature, adding extra convenience for tech-savvy travelers.

However, one of the best parts of flying KLM Business Class is the Delft Blue House, a special keepsake that makes the experience truly memorable. It is small touches like this that make KLM feel unique and distinctive compared to other airlines.

While there are some minor areas for improvement, I would not hesitate to fly KLM Business Class again. 

In fact, KLM is quickly becoming one of my favorite European airlines for its reliable service and consistent experience.
