The ANA MileageClub loyalty program offers some of the most valuable, albeit sometimes difficult to secure, opportunities for award flight redemptions. Unfortunately, the airline just announced a “partial” revision to the award charts for both ANA and Star Alliance and Partner Airlines. This means that some, but not all, award redemption rates are changing.
ANA Publishes A New Award Chart
ANA published a new award chart on their website, which includes a number of relatively minor devaluations on the award redemption rates through the MileageClub loyalty program. This devaluation affects both ANA and Star Alliance and Partner Airline redemption rates, but does not impact every route or every class of service. The revised award chart redemptions will apply for flight award tickets booked after April 18th, 2024.
The ANA Devaluation Impact On Award Rates
The impact of the devaluation for award redemptions is slightly complex, but here is a simple way to bucket the changes:
- International Flights With ANA (Partial New Award Chart)
- There are no changes for international Premium Economy or Economy rates
- There are no changes for Domestic flight rates
- Flights With Star Alliance And Partner Airlines (Partial New Award Chart)
International Flights Operated By ANA
The changes to the ANA MileageClub award charts for ANA operated flights only affects First Class and Business Class redemptions on international flights. The redemption rates for domestic ANA flights (all classes) and Premium Economy and Economy Class on international flights do not change. Here are a couple examples which demonstrate the impact of the devaluation on traditional “sweet spot” award redemptions (round-trip) via the ANA MileageClub program (“Low Season” rates):
Hawaii To Japan (With ANA)
- Business (old) – 60,000 points vs Business (new) – 80,000 points
- First: No Changes*
United States To Japan (With ANA)
- Business (old) – 75,000 points vs Business (new) – 100,000 points
- First: No Changes*
United States To Asia (With ANA)
- Business (old) – 80,000 points vs Business (new) – 105,000 points
- First: No Changes*
United States To Australia & New Zealand (With ANA)
- Business (old) – 105,000 points vs Business (new) – 130,000 points
- First: No Changes*
* There are no changes for the First Class award redemptions for the “Low Season,” but there are changes for both the “Regular Season” and “High Season.”
International Flights Operated By Star Alliance And Partner Airlines
The changes to the ANA MileageClub award charts for Star Alliance and Partner Airlines primarily affects First and Business Class redemptions for North America. With that said, there is an impact on the Economy Class rate for flights from Hawaii as well as non North American routes. Here are a couple examples which demonstrate the impact of the devaluation on traditional “sweet spot” award redemptions (round-trip) via the ANA MileageClub program:
United States To Japan (With Star Alliance And Partner Airlines)
- Business (old) – 85,000 points vs Business (new) – 110,000 points
- First (old) – 150,000 points vs First (new) – 170,000 points
United States To Europe (With Star Alliance And Partner Airlines)
- Business (old) – 88,000 points vs Business (new) – 100,000 points
- First: No Changes
Thankfully, there are no changes to the ANA “Around The World” rates at this time.
Final Thoughts
There is no such thing as a “good” award rate devaluation, but compared to the Turkish Airlines devaluation earlier this year, this one seems relatively mild. The majority of changes focus on First and Business Class award redemptions, with changes ranging from 10% – 30%. This leaves almost all Premium Economy and Economy Class redemptions out of scope for the time being; as well as the incredibly valuable “Around The World” ticket. Thankfully, ANA provided over 1.5 months of notice, which is quite a luxury in the airline devaluation space today.
